Styling Ideas - Spring Minis 2024
The number 1 client question is “what do we wear?!”
If you have no idea what to wear to your session, you’re not alone!
The MOST IMPORTANT thing to keep in mind when picking your outfits is that you pick something that is YOU. Wear something you feel comfortable in and that makes you feel like yourself, but like - your BEST self…
So here are some tips if you’re looking for outfit inspiration:
Keep it simple. Your family is not there to model their outfits, you’re just there to have a good time and capture your family memories. No need to get all fancy if that isn’t your vibe.
Colours are an important thing to keep in mind when picking your outfits. Try and stay away from bright and flashy colours and opt for neutrals instead. They’re timeless, don’t clash with any of the colours in our shooting environment and are easy to match with the rest of the fam. Especially when shooting in a nature/green setting, warm neutrals look great on camera.
Textures and layers and the key to making an outfit look interesting! A few ideas to incorporate this are overalls, interesting fabrics with lace, mixed materials or ruffles, and even a tiny peek of a white T-shirt under a sweater will do a lot for an outfit.
Patterns should be kept simple. You’ll want to stay away from large brand names, logos or big prints.
Accessories can lift an outfit to the next level. No need to go overboard, but adding small details like your favourite necklace or earrings is a great idea if it complements your outfit. Adding items like hats or headbands for the kids can be fun too!
Because is visual is always helpful, I’ve put together some looks. All of these items are currently available at Old Navy, H&M and Zara, but please note that it is not necessary to buy anything new! This is simply some inspiration and ideas of outfits that work well on camera in my experience.
Black and White Minis - Outfit ideas
Black and White Style Guide
It’s almost time for the yearly Black and White minis. One of the most asked questions when it comes to photo sessions is: “What do we wear?”.
So I’ve put together some info to make things as easy as possible for you!
Black and white minis are easy in the sense that you don’t have to worry about coordinating colours! If you’re unsure if certain items go well together or look good with the skin tone of your child, you can put it to the test by taking a black and white photo with your phone.
Textures and layers and the key to making an outfit look interesting! A few ideas to incorporate this are overalls, chunky knits, collared items, interesting fabrics with lace, mixed materials or ruffles, and even a tiny peek of a T-shirt under a sweater will do a lot for an outfit.
Patterns should be kept very simple. Stripes or small prints such as little flowers are great! But you’ll want to stay away from large brand names, logos or big prints.
Accessories can lift an outfit to the next level. You’re always welcome to add items like hats or headbands, or simply bring some options and we can try and decide during the session.
As a visual example I’ve put together some style ideas for boys, girls and babies.
Images explained
Boys - things to look for:
A collared, zippered or textured top.
Create interest with a hood.
Add a simple T shirt with the neckline popping out from underneath.
Add some extra interest with pocketed or textured pants.
Girls - things to look for:
Overalls and overall dresses are a great way to add in an extra layer. This also goes for boys and babies.
A higher neckline with a mock neck or turtle neck.
Layer a fuzzy and think, or a minimal buttoned cardigan over top of a simple pattern shirt.
Interesting silhouette and patterns in the pants.
Babies - things to look for:
Knit overalls are always a win.
A cute matching set to keep things simple, but with some interesting features like a chunky knit or buttons.
Hoods, buttons and pockets are a great way to create a little pop.
Dresses with small prints and ruffles.
Items shown in the images above are currently available at H&M, Zara and Old Navy. However, there is no need to purchase all new outfits! If you know what things to look out for, it will be much easier to put together an outfit that’s already in the kids’ closets!
